Lara Somogyi is a Los Angeles based harpist and solo artist. Using electronics, looper and fx pedals, she developed a unique sound that is inspiring a movement as she forges a new artistic identity for the harp.
Lara is a recent graduate from the Royal Academy of Music in London, and in addition to being a composer-performer, she is also an active session harpist - recording in a wide range of genres for Film and TV from studio sessions with the London Symphony Orchestra to pop records with Rufus Wainwright and Mark Ronson. She is featured on two albums that are up for 2018 Classic Brit awards this year: Hans Zimmer and Bleeding Finger’s Blue Planet II, and Tina Guo’s “Game On.”
She’s an endorsed artist for Roland & Boss, Earthquaker Devices, Walrus Audio, and innovative harp maker Camac Harps, who all help her share her vision to reimagine the way harp is used and experienced.
Cultivating a individual sound for the harp - she brings a fresh, modern sonority to the instrument. She was recently brought in to Hans Zimmer’s Bleeding Fingers studio specifically for her sound to compose and improvise material to picture for the score to Blue Planet II, featuring Radiohead. Her signature use of electronics and harp is featured on the score.
Recently, she was brought on board to work with neo-classical label Erased Tapes where she recorded Ben Lukas Boysen’s album “Spells” with Nils Frahm, which was aired on BBC Radio 6 by Mary Anne Hobbs. She worked closely with Ben using her unique sound to shape the aesthetic of the harp on his record, meticulously processing the harp through layers of tape delays.
As an active live artist, Lara is called upon for her unique combination of electroacoustic harp and fx pedals as well as her improvisation and compositional arrangements, recently performing live with artists such as Anderson .Paak, Bazzi, H.E.R., Daniel Caesar, Camila Cabello, and Josh Groban as well as on BBC with Guy Chambers’ Secrets of a Pop Song.
Lara’s compositions and live performances have been featured in Apple Music’s Up Next, an upcoming film for Lionsgate and is a ongoing featured performer at Google X for their women in technology and innovation initiative.
In 2018, Lara was awarded an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) for recognition of her contribution to her field.
Lara is currently writing and recording her debut album of original music, including "Hard Hat" and "Self Seed," soon available on spotify and iTunes.
